Pre-Planning: A Gift of Clarity and Comfort

Plan Ahead, Leave Peace Behind

At Dancy Funeral Home, we believe that pre-planning a funeral is one of the most thoughtful things you can do—for yourself and for the people you love.

Whether you’re planning for many years down the road or simply want to have a plan “just in case,” we’re here to make it simple, respectful, and completely on your terms.

You don’t need to make every decision right away. You don’t need to pre-pay unless you want to.

Pre-planning is simply about having a plan in place, so your family doesn’t have to guess—or worry—later on.

As a family-owned funeral home serving Caldwell and the surrounding West Essex community for generations, we’re proud to offer a calm, pressure-free place to begin.

It's not about preparing for death. It's about preparing your family for peace.

Why Plan Ahead

It Relieves Stress and Uncertainty for Your Family

When someone dies, surviving family members are often left to make dozens of decisions—quickly, and under emotional pressure. Pre-planning spares them that stress.

Instead of asking, “What would they have wanted?”

Your family will know—because you already told them.

Your Wishes Will Be Honored

Whether you prefer a traditional church service, a green burial, or a celebration of life with music and laughter, pre-planning ensures your preferences are known and respected.

  • Burial, cremation, or natural burial
  • Religious or secular ceremony
  • Open casket or no viewing
  • Music, readings, location, and tone
  • Veterans honors, spiritual symbols, or personal requests

We’ll help you make sure every detail reflects your values.

It Puts You in Control

Pre-planning gives you a voice in how you're remembered. From simple cremation to full traditional services—or something unique—we’ll help you shape a plan that reflects your life, legacy, and beliefs.

You can:

  • Choose the tone, location, and people involved
  • Select meaningful music, readings, or tributes
  • Decide what feels right—and what doesn’t

This isn’t about formality. It’s about having choices.

It’s a Loving Gift

Most importantly, pre-planning is an act of love. It gives your family a clear path during a difficult time—and the comfort of knowing they’re doing exactly what you would have wanted.

What You Can Pre-Plan

You Can Plan as Much—or as Little—as You’d Like

There’s no rule that says you need to pre-plan everything at once.

Some people choose to record just the essentials. Others outline every detail so their loved ones don’t have to wonder. Many start small—and expand their plans over time.

At Dancy Funeral Home, we’ll meet you wherever you are.

You can give us basic information to keep on file, or sit down with us to thoughtfully build out every aspect of your service.

There’s no pressure, no deadline, and no right or wrong approach. We’re here to help you think through your options at your own pace—whether in a single conversation or over time.

Pre-Funding Options

Planning for the Future—Without Pressure

While pre-funding is never required, some families find comfort in setting aside funds as part of the pre-planning process. Doing so can help ease the financial burden on loved ones later and provide peace of mind that resources will be available when they are needed.

At Dancy Funeral Home, we explain every option clearly and transparently. We do not sell insurance or investment products, and we never pressure anyone to fund a plan before they feel ready.

Option 1: The New Jersey Prepaid Funeral Trust™

A FDIC-insured trust fund, managed by the New Jersey State Funeral Director's Association, that allows you to set aside funds specifically for future funeral expenses.

This option allows families to pre-fund services in a secure, transparent way while documenting their wishes in advance.

Highlights include:

  • Interest earned on the account may help offset rising costs over time
  • Funds remain in your name until the time of need
  • Plans may be structured as revocable or irrevocable, depending on your needs
  • No commissions, sales gimmicks, or investment risk

These funds may be used for:

  • Funeral or cremation services
  • Merchandise such as a casket, urn, or printed materials
  • Cemetery or mausoleum expenses, including vaults and opening/closing fees
  • Clergy honorariums or house of worship offerings
  • Transportation, obituary costs, and other related expenses

You may choose to fund your plan all at once or contribute over time. We’ll help you structure it in a way that feels comfortable and manageable.

Revocable or Irrevocable?

A revocable trust can be changed or cancelled. An irrevocable trust is typically used when planning in connection with Medicaid or SSI and must remain dedicated to funeral-related expenses. We’ll help explain which option is appropriate for your situation.

Option 2: Life Insurance

Some families plan to use an existing life insurance policy to help cover funeral expenses.

This may be done by assigning part of a policy directly to the funeral home, or by naming a trusted beneficiary and outlining your wishes in advance.

We can help with:

  • Insurance verification
  • Coordinating assignment paperwork when applicable
  • Helping your family understand how funds may be used when the time comes

Life insurance can be a practical part of a broader pre-planning conversation, especially for families who want to record their wishes now and address funding in a flexible way.

Not Ready to Fund? That’s Okay.

Many families begin by simply recording their wishes and revisit funding later. Whether you’re ready to pre-fund now, exploring your options, or just trying to understand how it all works, we’re here to help.

Planning Ahead for Medicaid

If Medicaid eligibility may be part of your future planning, we can help you understand how irrevocable funeral funding may fit into the process.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pre-Planning

  • What information do I need to pre-plan a funeral?

Most people start with the basics: full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, place of birth, and next of kin. From there, you can record your service preferences—such as burial or cremation, clergy or celebrant, music, and readings.

If you’re not ready to decide on everything, that’s okay. Even sharing the essentials now saves your family from guesswork later. (You can also download our Pre-Planning Checklist for a complete guide.)

  • Can I pre-plan a funeral without pre-paying?

Yes. You can absolutely record your wishes without setting aside any funds. Many families begin by documenting their choices and return later to discuss payment options.

Pre-planning is about peace of mind, not financial pressure.

  • How does a prepaid funeral trust work in New Jersey?

New Jersey offers a regulated, FDIC-insured program called the New Jersey Prepaid Funeral Trust™. Funds you place in this trust are held safely for future funeral expenses.

You can choose a revocable trust (fully refundable and flexible) or, if you’re applying for Medicaid, convert it into an irrevocable trust that is exempt from asset limits.

Your money always remains in your name and must be used for approved funeral expenses.

  • Can I change my funeral plan after I’ve set it up?

If your plan is funded through a revocable trust, you can update or cancel it at any time—whether you wish to change the type of service, merchandise, or amount funded.

Once a trust becomes irrevocable (for Medicaid purposes), the funds must remain designated for funeral expenses, but you can still adjust many of the service details themselves.

  • What happens to prepaid funeral funds after death?

When the time comes, Dancy Funeral Home will work directly with the trust administrator to pay for the funeral expenses outlined in your plan.

If there is any balance left in a revocable trust, it is returned to the estate of the decedent.

If there is any balance left in an irrevocable trust, it is returned to the State of New Jersey as required by law.
