When you walk into Dancy Funeral Home, you expect to find a place where you can grieve in peace. But what if you found something more? Something that could quietly support you during one of life’s most difficult moments. What if that something was named Morris V. Prout? Who Is Morris at Dancy Funeral Home? Morris V. Prout is a five-year-old Australian Labradoodle from Indiana and Dancy Funeral Home’s full-time certified grief therapy dog. Morris is the calming presence in a room filled with worry and sadness. He is the small ray of sunshine on a dark day. Grief can feel overwhelming, but Morris has a gentle way of helping people ease into those emotions with comfort and compassion. Sometimes he softly rests his head on someone’s knee when he senses they need a friend. Sometimes he sits beside a child attending their first funeral, helping ease their nerves. Other times, he simply lies quietly nearby, offering silent companionship during an overwhelming moment. What Does Morris Do at Dancy Funeral Home? As a trained and certified grief therapy dog, Morris has been evaluated for temperament, obedience, and the ability to remain calm in highly emotional environments. His role is not to distract from the moment, but to gently support it. During visitations, funeral services, and private family gatherings, Morris offers a reassuring presence that often speaks louder than words. At Dancy Funeral Home, we believe care extends far beyond the formal service itself. It is found in the small details — the thoughtful gestures, personal touches, and quiet support that surround a family during one of life’s most difficult transitions. Morris is one of those details. Why Does Everyone Love Morris? Everyone loves Morris — but children, especially, seem to form an instant connection with him. We asked Olivia, age 6½, why she enjoys spending time with Morris. Her answer: “He’s calming, and he’s easy to get along with.” Paul, age 5½, says he loves Morris because “he’s a fluffy ball of fun!” Morris may be everyone’s best friend, but he also becomes a trusted confidant during difficult moments. Morris wants the world to know that it is okay to grieve in your own way. And if you ever need a quiet moment with a little company, Morris is your pup. In his five years of life, Morris has spent countless hours comforting grieving families and helping Dancy Funeral Home continue the above-and-beyond care they are known for. Learn More About Morris To learn more about Morris and the important role therapy dogs can play in grief support, we invite you to visit our website at dancyfuneralhome.com. You can also follow Morris’s community adventures — from library reading days to senior center visits and behind-the-scenes moments — on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok at @MorrisVProut. And if you happen to see Morris around town, please say hello. He considers ear scratchies a professional courtesy. 🐾 The Caldwell community and surrounding towns are lucky to have Morris V. Prout in their corner!

As Dancy Funeral Home begins a new chapter the Prout way, we are proud to reintroduce ourselves through a thoughtful balance of continuity and innovation. Re-introduction does not mean starting over. It does not mean changing who we are at our core. Instead, it means strengthening the foundation that families have trusted for years while enhancing the ways we serve them today. Continuity feels purposeful. Innovation feels dynamic. When these two elements coexist, they create a meaningful refresh—one that honors the past while embracing the future. For the Prout family, continuity means preserving the traditions, dignity, and personal care that families have come to expect from Dancy Funeral Home. A sense of security has always been central to their approach. Families can take comfort in knowing that long-standing values remain intact, guided by deep respect for each family’s unique wishes, beliefs, and legacy. Preserving each family’s individualized mission is not simply a philosophy—it is a responsibility the Prout family holds close to their heart.

This sentiment reflects the deep meaning behind the work that Dancy Funeral Home hopes to bring to families in the greater West Essex area.
