Michael J. Schumell is a dedicated Funeral Assistant at Dancy Funeral Home, where he brings kindness, steadiness, and a heartfelt commitment to supporting families through difficult times. Whether assisting with service logistics, escorting guests, or helping behind the scenes, Michael’s presence ensures that every family is cared for with respect and compassion.
A lifelong Verona resident and graduate of Verona High School, Michael has devoted more than 25 years to volunteer service with the Verona Rescue Squad, where he earned Life Member status in 2020. Over the years, he has held key leadership roles, including Certified Driver Trainer, Chief Engineer overseeing the emergency vehicle fleet, and Building & Grounds Chairperson. In 2021, he was elected to the Board of Trustees in recognition of his dedication and leadership.
In addition to his work at Dancy Funeral Home, Michael serves the greater West Essex community as a Communications Officer for local police departments, including Caldwell, North Caldwell and Essex Fells. His ability to remain calm under pressure and his steady, supportive nature make him a natural fit for both public safety and funeral service.
Michael married Julia R. Prout in 2024, joining another family with deep roots in community service. Together, they enjoy traveling, exploring new cuisines, and cooking at home — often surrounded by friends, family, and their beloved labradoodle therapy dog, Morris.
With a warm smile, a quick hand to help, and a passion for serving others, Michael embodies the spirit of care and community that defines the Dancy and Prout family traditions.
Michael is unlicensed and not qualified to make funeral arrangements, embalm or conduct funerals.
