Marie C. Durney

Marie Carmela Durney (nee Picone), 97, of Fairfield, N.J., a former North Caldwell resident passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

A Mass will be held for the family at Notre Dame Church, 359 Central Ave, Caldwell, NJ 07006, immediately followed by the interment at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Caldwell, N.J. Arrangements are by Paul Ippolito-Dancy Memorial, Caldwell, NJ.

Due to the restrictions of COVID-19 masks and social distancing are required at the church and cemetery.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Marie graduated from the College of Mount Saint Vincent (NY) with a bachelor's degree in biology and took graduate courses at Trinity College in Conn.

Marie was a resident of North Caldwell for more than 50 years before moving to Fairfield in 2017. She was a wonderful, loving wife and mother and, with her husband Larry's help, successfully nurtured her six boys and two girls with strong values, bright sense of humor, and excellent cooking. She contributed her strength and compassion to the community through her commitment to Notre Dame Church and her volunteer work, which included driving the blind and nineteen years as a Hospice volunteer.

Predeceased by her beloved husband, Lawrence J. Durney; her sisters Gloria, Norma, Claire, and Diane: and her son-in-law Arthur Hudson. She is survived by her devoted children, L. John Durney and his wife, Julie; Christopher P. Durney and his wife, Margaret; Michael P. Durney and his wife, Gracelaw Simmons; Peter M. Durney and his wife, Beth Shipley; Mary M. Durney; Katherine M. Reyes and her husband, Carlos; Martin J. Durney and his wife, Suzanne; and Thomas P. Durney and his wife, Christina; half-sister, Anne Marie Ford; 20 cherished grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
