Mrs. Josephine D'Alessio, 94, of Cedar Grove, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2026 in Cedar Grove, NJ.
Visiting will be held in the Dancy Funeral Home, 9 Smull Avenue, Caldwell, from 4 to 8 PM on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 103 S. Center Street, Orange, at 10 AM on Thursday, October 1. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum in East Hanover.
Born and raised in Orange, Mrs. D'Alessio met her husband, John, close to home—the two grew up a few blocks apart. They were married in 1953 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and made their home in Orange, where they raised their family and shared many happy years together.
Mrs. D'Alessio worked as a bookkeeper for the Orange Board of Education, balancing her career with the role that meant the most to her: caring for her family. A devoted mother, she poured her heart and soul into creating a loving home for her children. She was involved in their lives in countless ways, including serving as a Den Mother for her son's Cub Scout pack.
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel remained an important part of her life throughout the years. Even after she and John retired to Cedar Grove in 1996, she remained an active and supportive parishioner of the church where they had begun their married life together.
Mrs. D'Alessio enjoyed sewing and was a member of a sewing club. In retirement, she also enjoyed traveling and taking trips with the Bloomfield Seniors Club. Above all, however, her greatest joy was her family, and she will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John L. D'Alessio; her parents, Frank and Assunta (nee Barillari) Gulla; and her siblings, Sr. Francis Lucia Gulla of the Pontifical Institute of the Maestra Pie Filippini, Dr. Frank Gulla, Mary Juliano and Anthony Gulla.
Mrs. D'Alessio is survived by her loving children, Peter D'Alessio, Susan D'Alessio and Anthony D'Alessio (Donna); her cherished grandchildren, Dana (Sal), Philip (Daniela), Shannon, Nicole and Kelly; and two beloved great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org or to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at olmcorange.com/donations.
